The best lubricant for toys
Match your lube to your toy. It really is that simple.
Quick rule: water-based is safe with everything. Silicone-based is safe with everything except silicone toys. If you remember nothing else from this article, remember that.
Why it matters
Silicone lube can degrade the surface of silicone toys over time, turning smooth surfaces gummy, cloudy, or sticky. It's not immediate, but it's cumulative, and once a toy's surface is compromised, it's harder to clean properly and more likely to trap bacteria. Water-based formulas don't have that issue. If you're not sure what your toy is made of, water-based is the safe default, always.
By material
Silicone toys: water-based only. Glass, metal, and ABS hard plastic: anything goes, water or silicone. TPE / TPR / jelly toys: water-based, and ideally with a condom over the toy, because porous materials can absorb ingredients and are harder to sterilize. Ceramic and stone: same rules as glass, water or silicone both fine.
The spot-test trick
Not sure if your toy is real silicone or a look-alike? Put a small drop of silicone lube on the base and leave it for a few minutes. If the surface feels tacky or slightly melted, it's silicone (or a blend), and you should stick with water-based going forward.
